Preity on her friendship with Salman Khan

“From the film industry, the closest friend that I have is Salman. I don’t want to say that he’s my best friend as it sounds clichéd but he’s somebody I would do anything for. He’s my friend for ever and ever. There’s also Sussanne Khan (Hrithik’s wife). She’s somebody who I know before I became an actress and before Hrithik became an actor so I have known them since then. I meet her the least but she knows that I am always there for her. I don’t forget my relationships but I am not good at calling my friends every day. That’s not me. For me, a friend in need is a friend indeed. Friends don’t have to do anything. For me loyalty is very important and not tradition. I will always stand by my friends.

I said seven years ago that Narendra Modi should be the Prime Minister: Preity Zinta

I am doing two films right now, one is called Bhaiyyaji Superhit and the other is Happy Ending, and I had nothing to do with what it’s called. It’s a film with Saif. You will be hearing about me doing some other movies soon but as of now, it’s just about the IPL and the elections. It’s the first time since 1984 — it’s been the most decisive elections for India with the BJP coming as the single largest party with such a big majority.

Politics and elections
I had said seven years ago that I would like to see Mr Modi as Prime Minister. I started off as his biggest critic. Post Godhra, there were only negative thoughts in my head about him being communal. But then when I started going to Gujarat to shoot etc and meeting other people there, especially the Muslims and the stories I heard from them and the development that I saw around them made me see him in a different light. And you know what? The Supreme Court has given him a clean chit so who are we to judge? If the highest court in the country says something we must go by that, and secondly, it’s not the first time that we have had riots in India. We have had riots from 1984 to Kashmiri Pandit issues to the Godhra riots to the Muzaffarnagar riots – we have had all these issues but who, after falling down so badly, has gotten up and taken care of his state and done something for the people? So that means that there’s a future with this person and that was the only reason that I really started leaning towards him and becoming a fan of his. The way the Gujarat machinery works, it would be great if India could be like that. We would be that Golden Bird once again people talked of and poets wrote about. I just hope that people don’t expect him to do everything in one day and just give him some time!

Production time
I am going to make a lot of movies. Ishq In Paris will not the only film I ever make. That was a great learning experience and very tough to make but I think I am ready to come back bigger, better and stronger.

“I am not one to regret anything” – Preity Zinta

Preity Zinta who turns a year older this week is back in the thick of Bollywood. In a freewheeling interview with Subhash K Jha she talks about her voluntary decision to take a sabbatical from acting to focus on her stint as the owner of an IPL team. With characteristic candour she evaluates her current film career and also lays bare her inner thoughts on matters pertaining to money and the heart.

What plans for your birthday?
I think I’ll only invite those friends who bring expensive gifts along.

Do you feel your career as a movie actor has suffered because of your participation in the IPL?
Of course it has. But it was extremely conscious decision. It was a new challenge that I wanted to take on. Having done so, if I were to do it half-hearted I’d have been accused of taking on more than I could handle. But I must say this film industry has given me everything. And I owe my entire success to it. I wouldn’t have wanted to shoot for three days and then taken off for a foreign country with the IPL for a fortnight. I couldn’t balance both careers. Now that the IPL is settled I am back to doing movies. I am now entering the most interesting phase of my career.

Last year you produced Ishkq In Paris which went horribly wrong?
I wouldn’t say it went horribly work. But yes, it didn’t work out. Everything that could possibly go wrong went wrong. On our very first day of shooting temperatures fell to minus 23 degrees in Paris. It was the coldest European winter in 65 years. Then the train we were shooting on broke down, someone committed suicide. Every mistake I could make, I made. I am someone who has an opinion and I like to assert myself. I should have been more assertive. The only consolation is, no one in this movie industry lost a single penny because of my movie. Every actor has a failure. It’s okay. There are lots of things that have worked. This didn’t. So what? I’m the kind of person who runs even harder after I fall.

Salman Khan wants to marry Preity Zinta, but Preity prefers Karan Johar

Salman Khan had recently confessed that he would like to marry Preity Zinta, and prefer her as a life partner as compared to Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopa on Koffee with Karan. Preity, however, has taken his words very lightly and instead, joked about Karan Johar to be her preference as a husband. The dimple-cheeked actress was present at a recent award function and showed up on the show with Karan Johar himself.

On being probed, what she has to say on Salman’s comment on Karan Johar’s show, she reverted, “I think, Salman was just kidding on the show.” When we further asked her as to whom does she want to get married to, she exclaimed, “I want to marry Karan Johar (chuckles).” To which Karan lightheartedly reverted, “Koi mujhse bhi toh pooche main kisse shaadi karna chahta hoon (someone please ask me too about whom I want to tie knot with).”

We turned to KJo and enquired about the same, to which Karan reverted, “I too want to get married to Preity (laughs).” Jokes continued for a while, but the duo soon turned emotional when the topic of Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne came up. “We request the media to give some space to the couple. It’s a rough patch in their lives, so be supportive.” Soon after Hrithik broke the news of his separation, Preity had expressed her grief and said, “The news has come as a shock and I still don’t believe this has happened.”

Preity Zinta reacts to Mumbai gang-rape, says let the world see the rapists

Preity Zinta is just back from a two-month sabbatical in the US, straight into the vortex of the gangrape incident in Mumbai.

Preity fumes, “Is there anything left to be said or done? Haven’t women like me who are supposed to have a clout and a voice said it all during the Nirbhaya incident? Then what happened? Nine months have passed and the bastards who did it are still to be sentenced. How can rapists be discouraged if they know the law takes its own course?”

She derides the custom of covering the culprits’ faces with a black mask. “Why are rapists allowed to hide their faces? They should be forced to show their faces to the public. We need to look for remedial solutions to the horrendous atmosphere of uncertainty and fear that women have to face.

Otherwise we will become more and more self-centred. We’ll react to a crime only when it happens in our home.”

Preity feels it’s time for drastic measures. “Fast-track courts are not working. Maybe special courts to try rape cases are the solution… I think a better solution is to try offenders in crimes against women outside the courts and then just get rid of them? I am sorry if I sound radical and too drastic. But the time for pleasant ponitification and dainty legalese is over. We need to take stock of the situation now. ”

P for politics

Saddened by the current situation in the country, actor-businesswoman Preity Zinta is “thinking” about joining “politics” as she wants to be part of a movement to bring positive changes in India. “Of late, I have been thinking that I will join politics because it’s so sad what is happening to our country,” says Preity. “I really want to be somehow involved in positively changing our country… One fine day I’m going to come out and say vote for me,” she says.

The 38-year-old actor has even made an imaginary picture of Preity Zinta, the politician. She said: “I will be a very glamorous politician. I will have nice hair, nice clothes, and I will not be corrupt. How much do you genuinely need to eat? ‘Khaane ke liye aap biscuit hi khaate ho, gold biscuit to nahi khaate ho’.” Having said that, she hopes, “people like me don’t have to get into a political future, because there are good people.”

Rhehan Malliek on working with Preity Zinta in ‘Ishkq in Paris’

Preity is great and I was lucky to do film with her. Apart from being a huge star she is a fine actor, Preity tells me: “What I have learnt in 10 years will teach you”.

Rapists should be made impotent: Preity Zinta

Bollywood actress Preity Zinta has slammed the rapists in the Delhi gang-rape case and said that the culprits should be made impotent as a punishment. Other renowned Bollywood celebrities like Johan Abraham, Farhan Akhtar and Arjun Rampal have also expressed shock and grief over the gang rape.

While speaking in parliament today, MP Jaya Bachchan broke down in Rajya Sabha and asked for Government’s reaction over the tragic incident

“First of all, whatever happened? Did the government send any condolence to the family? Did you publicly make any announcement saying we are so sorry something so shameful happened in our country?” Ms Bachchan, a veteran film star, asked in Rajya Sabha.

“Sir, I’m basically an artist and I’m very, very disturbed by it. What is going to happen to her? Everybody will forget but she will remember for the rest of her life. It will be a scar. It’s a terrible mental torture. How are you going to repay for this?” she said, her voice choking with emotions.

Preity wrote an statement on Twitter, regrading this terrific issue.
