Preity’s trip to London (updates)

Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, known for her performances in films like Kal Ho Naa Ho and Veer Zaara, will be conferred a doctorate by a leading UK university.

Preity says of her visit: “I am extremely humbled and excited at the nomination as it really makes me feel that my work has been recognised. I may not have managed to become a doctor in my younger years but that dream is now being fulfilled”. Listen here to a short clip.

UEL Vice-Chancellor Professor Patrick McGhee said: “I am delighted that we are able to honour Preity Zinta. We notice her involvement in the Delhi blood donor camps and her tireless work in raising awareness of the challenges over AIDS, human trafficking and the plight of street children in India. Her involvement as Ambassador for the Godfrey Phillips Bravery Awards and the Loomba Trust proves that she is not afraid to stand up for justice and those in need”.

The ceremony will take place at midday and be followed by a press conference with Preity, Lord Dholakia, Lord Parekh and Vice-Chancellor Professor Patrick McGhee at 2pm.

Zinta, who has the unique distinction of addressing the Oxford Union yesterday, will receive the doctorate from the University of East London at a function tomorrow.

Later in the evening, the star will attend the Loomba Foundation Diwali dinner at the Guild Hall where the deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Lord Navnit Dholakia, deputy leader of the Lib Dem at the House of Lords will also be present.
