charitybutton Bollywood actress Preity Zinta has joined the fight against child trafficking by lending support to a campaign along with Melanne Verveer, the US Ambassador-at-large for global women’s issues at an event held here on Thursday.

The campaign called ‘Against Child Trafficking’ or A.C.T is an initiative of a non-profit organisation by the same name.

Zinta urged the millions of villagers across the country not to be lured by money and sell off their children.

“I want to give a message to those people who live in villages, that if anyone approaches you and asks you to sell your child to them, telling you that they will provide them employment, please don’t sell your child, because she is only going to be forced into either flesh trade or be forced to work as domestic help in somebody’s house,” said Zinta.

Child trafficking is a global problem, affecting large number of children worldwide.

According to estimates, around 1.2 million children are trafficked every year. Also, about 44 million, or 13 percent of all children in south Asia, are engaged in labour, with more than half in India.

Trafficking of children for labour, prostitution or domestic services is widespread, especially within Bangladesh and India as well as to Europe and the Middle East. (ANI)

charitybutton Preity Zinta has not hung up her designer boots and called it quits, on the contrary she’s put on sports shoes now.

The actress who was away from Bollywood for “just six weeks and has not migrated to LA”, came up with the idea of making money for her charity by forming an all-international girls’ basketball squad called the Dream Girls team.

“The players will be internationally-famous women like film stars, supermodels, socialites and, of course, there’ll be me – the captain – and we’ll be playing with professional basketball teams around the world. American experts from NBA will train us,” said Preity, who stands 5 feet 5 inches tall in her socks but has quite a sporting background. “Nobody knows I’ve been a gymnast for 11 years, I did karate for nine years, I am very good at basketball and I rifle shoot too,” she said, adding, “People said that it was a crazy idea to give one-and-a half years to IPL, but then today, financially, I don’t have to care for the rest of my life.”

Does that mean she won’t do films for money anymore? “Are you kidding? I’m not retiring to the jungles! Of course, money is important. I do charity and all but I still need to wear my brands, travel first class and pamper myself. I believe more in living rich than dying rich. My biggest fear is to die broke, ex-film star,” laughed the bubbly actress who devotes a lot of time to causes like child trafficking and the upliftment of women.

“I want to do full-on commercial films now,” she said. And for that, she conducted a poll on the net where she asked fans who they would like to see her with. “There’s a tie between Saif Ali Khan and Shah Rukh! I’m going to go in search of them now,” laughed Preity.

But you needn’t worry about a present. For, the bubbly, 34-year-old actress has got a bagful of gifts that she wants to distribute after a “small get-together with friends”. Talking to BT yesterday, Preity said, “I want to do something more meaningful. I feel like it’s my new beginning and I want to do something completely different. I’m going to be a part of this campaign called Light a Billion Lights where you sponsor electricity to a complete village which works on solar technology. That is something I’m going to do.”

Then, Preity also intends to sponsor the education of underprivileged children. “I feel the only difference between a rich and a poor kid is that the former has the resources to get proper education whereas the poor kid doesn’t. I feel if a poor kid is given the same, he will do much better than the rich kid,” said the actress who is hell-bent on making a difference in whatever capacity that she can. “God has given me so much so now I feel it’s my turn to give back,” explained Preity. And what will she gift herself today?

“I was thinking of buying myself a luxury car but then everytime I drive on bumpy Mumbai’s roads, I get disappointed and change my mind!” But if there is one wish she has for herself this year, then Preity wants her IPL team to lift the trophy this year. “It has these little diamonds on it and diamonds are a girl’s best friend — so you know what I mean, don’t you,” smiled the pert actress saucily.

Preity and Salman spread Christmas cheer

It is true that pictures say more than a million words. On Christmas eve, After Hrs had taken some kids from the Smile Foundation to meet their favourite actor Salman Khan.

What came unexpectedly and literally as Santa’s gift to the tiny tots was another smiling visitor who proved to be the surprise package of the day. Preity Zinta, dropped in to meet her good friend and share lunch with him on the sets of his film, Veer.

Preity was not only sporting and kind-hearted enough to help Salman in distributing the gifts but she also spent time and posed with the delighted children, sang songs with them and kept them occupied till Salman got ready for his Santa act. And it was Preity who sang the loudest when the girls in the group regaled Salman with a song. Needless to add, we love you Preity…and the kids loved you too.

Fifteen kids of the Smile Foundation — a national level organisation working on children’s health and education in 21 states of the country — had a whale of a time as none other their ‘favouritest’ actor Salman Khan gave them gifts on Christmas eve. However, they did not anticipate the double-whammy when Preity Zinta joined them a little later — which was a pleasant surprise. She had dropped in to visit Salman on the way to a shoot.

The kids named Fie, Sameer, Mithilesh, Pooja, Mayuri, Jyoti and Amrish were excited and thrilled to bits as they also got to take a look at the sets of Salman’s forthcoming film, Veer. Salman asked them, “Where are the rest of the guys? I was expecting more of you. Have they all gone to see Ghajini?”

As a gesture of gratitude, the kids gifted him a lamp with a candle and sang, May God Bless You while Salman beamed and joined in with the chorus. Preity Zinta remembered, “I learned this song in school.” It was a touching day for the kids, the stars
And, of course, us. Here’s to a Merry Christmas!

We need the environment. Preity is supporting any way to make sure the nature will not get lost. (1,2,3). Manisha Koiruala is spotted wearing the same ’say no to plastic bag’ that Preity showcased at Manish Mahotra’s Spring/Summer ‘08 Fashion Show.

We from PZFC are supporting this cause too. Just carry your own bag and put everything in it. Need tips, we looked for two options. (1,2) Or like every lady does, A VERY LARGE bag.

Showcase your support, and mail us! (pzfc.gallery@gmail.com)
